Judges look for clean execution first. Smooth foam seams, even paint, secure attachments, and well-finished edges score higher than ambitious builds with visible hot glue, unpainted seams, or wobbly props.

• Seam quality: edges should be flush, primed, and painted. No raw foam showing.
• Paint finish: smooth base coat, clean weathering, no drips or brush marks on visible surfaces.
• Structural integrity: nothing wobbles, droops, or falls off during the walk-on.
• Detail work: buckles, rivets, gems, and trim are attached cleanly and consistently.

Build books: document your process

A build book shows judges how you made the costume. Include reference images, work-in-progress photos, material lists, and notes about techniques. Judges use this to evaluate what skills you used, not just the final result.

Walk-on vs. skit: choose what fits your build

Walk-ons are 30 to 60 seconds of posing and turning on stage. Best for armor, detailed costumes, and builds that speak for themselves. Skits are 1 to 3 minutes of performance. Best if your character has recognizable moves, dialogue, or a dramatic reveal.
