Build guide
Thrift the blazer first. Everything else in this build depends on what shade of navy you end up with, and you need to find the skirt, shirt, and even the ribbon to match it. I've done this twice and both times I bought the skirt online before I had the blazer in hand, and both times I spent an afternoon at a Joann in Burbank trying to find a way to make them read the same color. Now I start at the thrift store and work outward.
The short pink wig is where the build actually lives. Get the silhouette right and Aira is instantly readable. Mess it up and you're a girl in a school uniform. The ahoge — that single strand that pokes up from her hairline — is what people notice first. It also collapses first. Don't argue with physics. Thread 20-gauge craft wire through the strand from root to tip, pin the base to the wig cap, bend it into shape. Takes ten minutes. My first Aira wig lasted exactly two hours at Anime Expo before the ahoge gave up and flopped forward. My second one, with the wire, made it through a full Saturday, outdoor activation and all.
Back-tease the crown of the wig before you lock it with Got2b Glued. The volume at the root is the difference between a wig that reads anime-pink and one that reads party store. Let it set on a wig stand overnight.
Everything else about this build is shopping. Navy pleated skirt to match the blazer. White button-down with a collar you can see. A looped maroon ribbon, not a pre-tied bow — pre-tied bows are too stiff and symmetrical and they look cheap. Cut 50cm of dark red satin ribbon, loop it, stitch the center, and let one tail hang about 3cm longer than the other. That's it. That's what she wears.
One detail that I see skipped constantly: bike shorts or spats under the skirt. Aira's skirt is short. If you're going to a busy convention and you want to pose for photos without anxiety, just wear them. They're $10 on Amazon and they're not a suggestion.
Budget runs $75 on the low end if you thrift well — blazer for $10, skirt from H&M for $18, wig for $25 — and up to $190 if you're buying everything new. Three weeks is plenty. The blazer and skirt are the longest lead items. Everything else takes an afternoon.
