Chihiro Rokuhira Cosplay

I built my first attempt at this without the scar. Skipped it entirely. Told myself I'd figure it out later. Got to the con, spent the whole day watching people squint at me trying to place the character, and exactly zero people recognized me without prompting.

The scar is the build. Everything else is support work.

Chihiro's diagonal slash from left cheekbone across the nose bridge is what separates "guy in dark blazer with a sword" from a Kagurabachi cosplay. It's character-specific in a way no amount of accurate suiting or prop finish can replace. Get it right and people who've read two chapters know who you are from across the dealer's hall. Get it wrong, or skip it, and you're a mystery.

This is the technique that works: cleanse and prime your skin, apply spirit gum in a diagonal strip following the reference angle (lock this from manga panels first, the slope matters), press a tissue paper strip into the spirit gum while wet, seal with two coats of liquid latex letting each coat dry fully, paint skin-tone base over the whole area, add red-brown wound color into the crease with a small brush, set with translucent powder, seal everything with Urban Decay All Nighter spray. Total time: 15 minutes once practiced. First time: 45 minutes and you'll want to redo it.

Practice it three times at home before the con. Not once. Three times, on camera, under bathroom lighting and then outdoor lighting, because flash photography reveals every edge you didn't blend.

Scar wax looks incredible in photos and chips off by lunch. The tissue+latex method is slightly flatter but survives a full eight-hour day of eating, talking, and sweating. I know which one I carry.

The prop is the second hard part. Pre-made Enten replicas from Gcosplay and Sword Slice look great on a shelf and will get you rejected at the door of every major anime con. They're resin or metal. Foam is the answer: 8mm EVA over a 12mm fiberglass rod core, beveled edges, Plasti-Dip in three thin coats, matte black Rustoleum finish. The fiberglass core keeps a 40-inch blade straight all day without failing the prop tap test the way PVC does. PVC sounds like a bat when security knocks on it. Fiberglass flexes.

For the blazer: CUT/SEW pattern 029, broad fit, in dark charcoal gabardine. Or thrift a black school blazer and spend $6 on iDye Poly to darken it. Either route works. The modification people miss is the sleeves. Rolling them up without modification creates a bunching disaster. Shorten the sleeve lining 2-3 inches shorter than the outer sleeve before you finish the hem, then fold and tack a single clean roll. It stays put for eight hours. Untailored rolling stays put for thirty minutes.

Timeline is five weeks if you're sewing from scratch. The prop build takes two weekends alone. Start the scar practice at week three. Budget is $100 on the low end if you thrift the blazer and white shirt, $260 if you're sewing everything new and buying quality makeup. The foam and core materials run about $46 regardless, so don't count on the prop being cheap.

One last thing: check your convention's prop policy before you build. Most major anime cons allow foam blades up to a specific length and will measure at the door. Build to 42 inches or under and you'll pass everywhere that matters.
