Build guide
The mustache will betray you. I've seen it happen at Anime Expo, at FanExpo, at a regional con in a hotel ballroom where the lighting was terrible and you could still see the thing peeling at the corner by 11am. Stick-on novelty mustaches are not cosplay props. They are party favors. Mehron spirit gum or Ben Nye. Two thin layers. Pat until tacky. Press and hold for 30 seconds. That's the whole build decision that separates a recognizable Sakamoto from a guy in a black suit.
The suit itself is not complicated. You're looking for slim-fit, narrow lapel, minimal shoulder structure. Not a costume. Not a boxy department store rack suit. H&M's slim line, ASOS, or a good thrift-store find will do it for $60-90. What you're avoiding is any suit that makes your shoulders look wide or your torso look rectangular. Sakamoto's silhouette is tapered. Fitted without being fashion-forward about it.
Glasses next. The lens diameter is the spec that matters: 40-45mm, round, thin frame. Party store costume glasses run 55-60mm and look like you're cosplaying as a cartoon of the character rather than the character. Buy real frames with zero-prescription clear lenses from an optical retailer or an Amazon listing that sells the frame only. $15-20. Worth it.
Wig is the easiest part of this build, which is surprising because people still get it wrong by over-styling it. Silver-white blend, short, slightly textured. Style dry with your fingers and a small amount of wax. You want it to look like someone forgot to comb it this morning, not like it was spiked on purpose. Intentionally casual. That's the whole note.
Wear order matters on con day: suit on first, then wig, then glasses, then mustache. Last thing goes on, first thing to fail if you put it on too early. Pack the spirit gum bottle and a backup strip of pre-cut crepe hair. The H&M slim black suit at the Santa Monica Place has the right lapel width, for reference, but any location should have the same cut.
Total build at the budget end: $65-90. At the quality end: $150-180. The cost difference is almost entirely the suit. Everything else is fixed. Three weeks is generous for a sourcing build with no sewing. Two is fine if you know where to shop.
