The honest answer is that kits are just the first bill. You also need primer, paints, brushes, basing materials, and whatever tools you do not already own. Most first-time army builders underestimate total cost by 20-30% by forgetting supplies.
Kit costs vary by faction
Space Marines and Necrons sit in the middle of the pricing range. Horde armies like Orks and Tyranids require more boxes to hit a given points value, so model count drives the final number up fast. Elite armies like Grey Knights and Custodes cost more per kit but need fewer boxes. A Combat Patrol box ($160) is usually the most cost-efficient starting point regardless of faction.
Supplies add $80-150 to any first army
You need at minimum: spray primer ($12-15 per can), a starter paint set ($30-50 for Army Painter or Citadel basics), a brush set ($15-25), and basing materials like sand, tufts, and paint ($10-20). Do not buy a full Citadel range on your first army. Twelve to fifteen paints cover most base coat, wash, and highlight needs for a single faction.
Budget options cut costs by 20-30%
Games Workshop retail is full price everywhere. Third-party retailers often sell at 15-25% off. Second-hand markets like eBay and r/Miniswap can run 30-50% below retail for unbuilt kits. Splitting a Battleforce or Combat Patrol box with a friend who plays a different faction eliminates overlap and stretches every dollar further.
