Cosplay Budget Calculator
Know what you'll spend before you spend it. Pick a build type, adjust materials, and get a realistic total with a safety buffer for the things you'll inevitably forget.
Track the real numbers as you build
This calculator gives you a starting estimate. Costumary tracks your actual spending, materials, timeline, and progress across every build, all in one workspace.
Start organizing your buildsHow to budget a cosplay build
Every cosplay goes over budget the first time because builders forget consumables. Adhesive, sandpaper, primer, paint, heat gun refills, replacement X-Acto blades. These add $30 to $80 to a build. The calculator above includes a configurable safety buffer for exactly this reason.
Typical cost ranges by build type
A closet cosplay using thrifted and owned clothes costs $30 to $80. A sewn costume from a commercial pattern runs $100 to $300 depending on fabric choice. A full EVA foam armor build (chest, shoulders, gauntlets, greaves) typically costs $200 to $500 in materials. A complex multi-material build with LEDs, 3D-printed parts, and specialty paints can exceed $800.
Where the money actually goes
For foam builds: EVA foam sheets ($3 to $8 per sheet, you'll need 4 to 12), contact cement ($12 to $18 per can), heat gun ($25 if you don't own one), primer ($10 to $15), paint ($20 to $40), and finishing sealant ($12 to $18). For sewn builds: fabric is 60 to 70% of cost, then thread, interfacing, closures, and notions. Always buy 15 to 20% more fabric than the pattern calls for.
First build vs. repeat build
Your first cosplay build costs more because you're buying tools you don't own yet: heat gun, rotary cutter, cutting mat, sewing machine needles, brushes. By your third build, you already own these and your per-project cost drops by 30 to 40%. The calculator lets you mark items you already own to see the real cost of just the materials you need to buy.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a cosplay cost to make?
A basic closet cosplay costs $30–80. A sewn costume runs $100–300. A full EVA foam armor build typically costs $200–500 in materials. Complex multi-component builds with LEDs and 3D printing can exceed $800. Use the calculator above with your actual material choices for a realistic estimate.
How much does a fursuit cost?
Materials for a partial fursuit (head, paws, tail) cost $200–500 for faux fur, foam, adhesive, and eyes. A full digitigrade suit runs $500–1200 in materials alone. Commissioned fursuits range from $2,000–$8,000+ because of the 100+ hours of labor involved.
How do I budget for a sewing project?
Start with fabric (typically 60–70% of cost), then add thread, interfacing, closures, and notions. A simple garment from quilting cotton costs $20–50. A lined wool jacket runs $80–200. Always add a 15–20% buffer for muslins, mistakes, and forgotten notions.
How much does a Gunpla build cost?
A High Grade snap-build costs $15–30 for the kit alone. A fully painted Master Grade runs $50–120 including primer, paints, panel liner, and topcoat. Custom painted Real Grades with weathering can run $80–150 in total materials.
What does LARP armor cost to make?
A basic foam LARP kit (tunic, belt, one prop) costs $50–120. Leather armor runs $150–400 for vegetable-tanned leather, hardware, and dye. A complete character kit with layered garb, armor, and accessories typically costs $300–600.
Why do craft builds always go over budget?
Builders forget consumables (adhesive, sandpaper, primer), underestimate fabric yardage for pattern matching, and don't account for tool costs on first builds. This calculator includes a configurable safety buffer and a 'forgotten items' reminder to help prevent overruns.
