I ruined my first Hinata jacket. Ordered a "lavender" fleece online, cut into it, sewed the whole thing, and stood in my kitchen under fluorescent light thinking it looked fine. Then I took it outside and it was gray. Not gray-purple. Just gray. The return window had closed.
The jacket color is the entire build. Everything else is sourcing. Get the color wrong and the costume is wrong, full stop, even if the wig is perfect and the contacts are on and the headband is at your neck like it should be.
Hinata's Shippuden jacket is warm medium lavender — it has pink in it, not blue. When you hold swatches, the wrong ones look slightly cool, like they're lit from behind by a blue screen. The right one looks warm, almost like lavender soap. This is a distinction that doesn't come through on any monitor I've ever looked at, which is why I now go to the Joann in Pasadena with a printout of the frame from the anime and hold fabric up to it under the store's daylight-mimicking ceiling bulbs before I buy anything.
Once you have the right fabric, the jacket itself is a 2-weekend build. I used a plain raglan hoodie from Target as a base (they run lavender in spring, olive and burgundy in fall, so timing matters), cut the sleeves off at the shoulder seam, and sewed cream fabric in as replacement sleeves. The inner dark mesh layer at the wrist is just fishnet fabric tacked down with a few hand stitches. It doesn't have to be structural. It just has to peek out.
The hood needs interfacing at the rim or it collapses. This sounds like overkill for a hoodie. Do it anyway.
Wig: get dark indigo, not true navy. True navy goes teal under convention lighting and you'll hate every photo. Blue-black is better than navy. An indigo-tinted blue-black is perfect. Keep it flat and sleek — Hinata's hair has almost no volume. If you backcomb it at all, even a little, it'll read wrong. I trimmed mine to just below the chin and cut the fringe straight across with sewing scissors before I went to bed the night before AX.
Contacts: I used white sclera lenses at my first Hinata con. I lasted about four hours before my eyes were so dry I was tearing up in photos. The lavender circle lenses I switched to the second time were comfortable all day and photographed almost identically. The Byakugan reads from the color and the size of the iris, not from whether it's technically white. Pale lavender wins on every metric.
The headband placement is the thing that separates people who watched Shippuden from people who glanced at a thumbnail. In Part II, it goes around the neck. Not on the forehead. Neck. I have had exactly one photographer at a con say something when I wore it correctly, and it was "oh thank god."
Budget range is $70-100 for a clean build if you DIY the jacket on a base. Add $30-40 if you sew from scratch or if you buy a nicer wig. The contacts are $20-30 depending on brand and whether you need prescription.

Lavender hoodie jacket with cream sleeves
Modifications for lavender hoodie jacket with cream sleeves: Color-block the pattern pieces: cut the jacket body in lavender fabric and the sleeve pieces in cream/off-white. After assembling the cream sleeves, tack a strip of dark navy fishnet to the inner sleeve seam allowance so it peeks out at the wrist cuff. The zipper runs front-center as drafted. Interface the hood rim with medium-weight interfacing so it holds its shape.
Modifications for lavender hoodie jacket with cream sleeves: Use the hoodie view. Add a separating zipper to the front opening by cutting the center-front seam and finishing the edges with a facing before installing the zipper. Color-block sleeves in cream as described above. This is a pullover pattern adapted for zip-up, so add 5/8" seam allowance at the center front when cutting.
The NDLWRKshop pattern is the better base because it's drafted as a zip-up from the start. S9240 works if you already own it, but the zip conversion adds complexity. Both are raglan construction, which produces the correct sleeve angle for Hinata's jacket silhouette.
Dark blue baggy pants with ankle taper
Modifications for dark blue baggy pants with ankle taper: Use View A (tapered leg, side pockets). Cut in dark navy stretch twill. Add 1.5" to the inseam length for the mid-shin taper typical of Shippuden shinobi pants. Omit side pockets if you prefer a cleaner line. The elastic waist as drafted is correct — don't substitute a drawstring.
Any basic tapered jogger pattern works here. The character read comes from the dark color and the ankle length, not from specific construction details. McCall's M8057 is widely available in fabric stores.
