General Fabric Retailers (Not Fursuit-Specific)

JoAnn Fabrics (closed, do not plan around it)

Status: Gone. Every location is shut.

If you learned to sew in a JoAnn, this one stings. The chain filed Chapter 11 for the second time in a year in January 2025, failed to find a buyer, and announced in February 2025 that all of its roughly 800 stores would close. The last stores wound down through spring 2025. Older fursuit guides still send beginners there for cheap minky, so if you are following a tutorial written before 2025, mentally delete that step.

What JoAnn was actually good for was minky, fleece, and notions at coupon prices, never body fur. Replace it with a specialist: Howl, FursuitSupplies, or Stoffhummel for minky, and any of the fur suppliers above for the fur itself. Local independent fabric shops and Hobby Lobby cover the fleece and notions side, but expect to pay list price without the coupon habit. The same warning applies to marketplace fur: Amazon listings are cheap per yard, but you cannot order a swatch, dye lots are uncontrolled, and there are no returns once you have cut into it.
