Build guide
The orange gi, the blue undershirt, the hair that stands straight up. Goku is the most recognized anime character on any convention floor, and his outfit looks easy. That is the trap.
There are only a few pieces: a wrap-front gi top, loose pants, blue wristbands and obi, boot covers, and the wig. Because there are so few pieces, each one has to be right. The orange has to be the right orange. The wig has to hold. The boot covers have to read as boots, not fabric tubes tied to your shoes.
The gi is an intermediate sew. If you have made pajama pants or a bathrobe, you have made a gi. The top is wrap-front with side ties and no closures. The V-neck shows the blue undershirt. The pants are wide legs with elastic at the waist and a side slit at the hem. Blue trim at the ankle is the detail that makes them read as Goku pants instead of orange pajama bottoms.
The wig is the skill check. Goku's hair is the most recognizable silhouette in anime, and a floppy wig kills the whole build. Buy the wig first and confirm it spikes before you cut a single piece of fabric. The spikes do not go straight up. They curve back from the forehead, flare out at the sides, and spike up and out at the back. Section the wig, spike in small groups with Got2b Glued, let it set overnight. Do not touch it while it dries.
For the orange fabric, cotton twill in persimmon or pumpkin is the sweet spot. It hangs like a real gi, breathes on the con floor, and reads as Goku orange on camera. Polyester or shiny orange reads as a Spirit Halloween costume. Order swatches and check them in sunlight before buying yardage.
The boot covers need structure. Line them with interfacing or use faux leather so they hold a boot shape instead of collapsing into fabric scrunchies. The blue wristbands and obi belt finish the look.
Budget runs about $70 to $200. The low end is a dyed karate gi and a budget wig. The high end is quality cotton twill, a professionally styled wig, and faux leather boot covers. The wig and the fabric color are what sell the build, not how much you spent.
Four weeks is realistic. Week one: wig and fabric swatches. Week two: pattern and cut the gi. Week three: sew the gi, undershirt, and boot covers. Week four: finish the wig and do a full suit-up with movement test.
